Ingredients

We have several formulas that do not include chicken as a main protein source, including Diamond Naturals Skin & Coat All Life Stages Salmon & Potato Formula, Diamond Naturals Grain-Free Pasture-Raised Beef & Sweet Potato Formula for Dogs and Diamond Naturals Grain-Free Wild-Caught Whitefish & Sweet Potato Formula for Dogs. It’s important to note that these formulas do contain natural flavor, which is derived from chicken. This ingredient is developed through a process that reduces the size of the protein molecules and is less likely to trigger allergies in pets.

Diamond Pet Foods offers a diverse line of formulas, with options available to meet a wide range of pet needs and preferences. If you would like personal advice on which formula may best meet your pet’s needs, reach out to our product specialists and we will work with you on a specific recommendation. Additionally, you can visit our dog formula quiz or cat formula quiz to explore products that may work for your pet.

If stored properly, our dry formulas will stay fresh until the “Best By” date, which can be found in the production code box. To help ensure freshness, we recommend you store your food in a container in a cool, dry location. Be sure to make note of the “Best By” date before you empty the bag into the container so you know how much time you have to use the food. For our canned formulas, we don’t recommend leaving an open can out for more than 30 minutes. Partially eaten cans should be covered or put into an airtight container in the refrigerator and kept no longer than three days after opening.

The recommended storage method is to keep the food in its original packaging to help maintain freshness and keep vital information handy. You may store the entire bag in a closed container as well. If you prefer to pour the food directly into a covered container, we recommend that you cut out the UPC/production code and “Best By” date from the bag before you empty and store it in the container, so you have the information readily available. Whichever storage method you choose, the food should be kept in a cool, dry location since excess heat or moisture may cause the nutrients to break down. For more tips on how to store your pet’s food, visit our blog.

Yes, we do have a senior dog formula, Diamond Naturals Senior Dog Chicken, Egg & Oatmeal Formula, which contains carefully determined protein and fat to meet the needs of aging dogs, guaranteed probiotics and fiber for ease of digestion and glucosamine and chondroitin for joints. Your senior dog may benefit from a low-calorie diet, especially if they are not very active or are overweight. It is important to closely monitor your dog’s body condition. Your veterinarian can show you what an “ideal, lean” body condition is and help you keep your dog in this condition. We recommend consulting with your veterinarian before making changes to your dog’s diet.

Currently, our bags are designated as a #7 in the Resin Identification Code system used by manufacturers and recyclers. This means the bags are manufactured with a plastic resin, similar to other plastic containers. Check with your local recycling center to see if this type of plastic is accepted.

Health and Lifestyle

Food allergies in dogs are typically reactions to specific types of protein in the food. Any protein in the food could potentially trigger a reaction in a dog that is allergic to that particular protein ingredient. While some dogs with food allergies will do well on certain diets, others will not – it all depends on what they are allergic to. Diamond Pet Foods does not have any foods labeled as “hypoallergenic.” We recommend consulting with your veterinarian to determine which type of diet is best for your pet.

Small breed dogs usually weigh less than 25 pounds as adults. Large breed dogs typically weigh 70 pounds or more as adults.

Some of our formulas are designed with joint health in mind. We include glucosamine and chondroitin — ingredients that support healthy joints — in several of our formulas, including Diamond Naturals Senior Dog Chicken, Egg & Oatmeal Formula, Diamond Naturals Large Breed Adult Dog Chicken & Rice Formula and Diamond Naturals Large Breed Adult Dog Lamb Meal & Rice Formula.

Additionally, helping your dog maintain a healthy weight is one of the most effective ways to reduce joint strain and manage arthritis symptoms. Excess weight can worsen joint pain and mobility issues. As always, we recommend discussing your dog’s specific needs with your veterinarian, who can help create a treatment plan that may include prescription medications, supplements or physical therapy.

Our Diamond CARE Urinary Support Formula for Adult Cats is formulated to support urinary tract health. It helps promote a healthy urinary tract by reducing urine pH and has controlled levels of magnesium and phosphorus. However, urinary issues in cats can have a variety of underlying causes, so it’s important to work closely with your veterinarian to determine the most appropriate treatment and diet for your cat’s specific condition.

Yes! Diamond CARE Weight Management Formula for Adult Dogs is a low-fat, high-fiber diet to help control weight in dogs. Diamond CARE Weight Management Formula for Adult Cats is a low-fat, high-fiber diet for weight loss and weight maintenance in cats.

Both formulas are also complete diets, so you can feed them long-term.

We recommend consulting with your veterinarian to help determine the best diet for your dog or cat based on their needs.

Yes, we have two formulas that may be good options for dogs with sensitive skin.

Diamond CARE Sensitive Skin Formula for Adult Dogs has a limited number of ingredients, including a low molecular weight, single source, digestible protein. Omega fatty acids are also included to promote healthy skin and coat.

Diamond Naturals Skin & Coat All Life Stages Dog Salmon & Potato Formula helps maintain healthy skin and coat at all life stages and contains real salmon as the first ingredient.

We recommend consulting with your veterinarian to help determine the best diet for your dog based on their needs.

Yes! Diamond CARE Sensitive Stomach Formula for Adult Dogs is a limited-ingredient diet formulated for dogs with sensitive stomachs. It includes a fiber blend to help support digestion and is complete and balanced for everyday, long-term feeding.

We recommend consulting with your veterinarian to help determine the best diet for your dog based on their needs.

Yes! Diamond CARE Rx Renal Formula for Adult Dogs is formulated for dogs diagnosed with acute or chronic kidney disease. The formula contains nutritious, easily digestible protein and carefully regulated levels of phosphorus and sodium. Because these levels are below the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) nutritional guidelines for maintenance adult dog diets, this formula is only to be fed under veterinary supervision.

We recommend consulting with your veterinarian to help determine the best diet for your dog based on their needs.

Feeding and Nutrition

Yes, you can mix two different Diamond Pet Foods products, as long as both are appropriate for your pet’s age, size and health needs. Make sure to read the feeding recommendations for all products you are feeding and adjust accordingly, as different foods may recommend different amounts. If you’re introducing a new formula, we recommend doing so gradually over 7–10 days to help avoid digestive upset.

Unless directed by your veterinarian, it is not necessary to add supplements to your pet’s diet. All Diamond Pet Foods products are formulated to be complete and balanced in accordance with Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) guidelines to provide your pet with the nutrition they need.

The feeding guide for each formula is listed on the packaging as well as on the individual product pages of this website. These guides are offered as starting points to determine the right amount to feed your pet. The amount listed in the feeding guide is the recommended total number of 8-ounce measuring cups (standard kitchen measuring cup) that your pet should eat per day. Feeding amounts can be adjusted based on the age, breed and activity level of your pet.

How often you feed your pet depends on their age, size, activity level and health needs, but here are some general guidelines for both dogs and cats:

For Dogs:
– Puppies (under 6 months): 3–4 small meals per day
– Puppies (over 6 months of age) and Adult Dogs: Typically 2 meals per day (morning and evening)

For Cats:
– Kittens (under 6 months): 3–4 meals per day
– Kittens (over 6 months of age) and Adult cats: Usually 2 meals per day, but some do well with free-choice feeding (dry food left out during the day) if they’re good at self-regulating. Cats tend to prefer smaller, more frequent meals — so if you’re able to offer more small meals throughout the day, that’s ideal!

While both free-choice feeding and set meal times are acceptable for many pets, having set meal times allows pet parents to control and monitor portions.

For more information, visit our blog. Additionally, we recommend consulting your veterinarian to determine the best feeding plan for your pet, based on their individual needs.

We recommend a gradual transition between formulas over a period of 7–10 days.

For the first two to three days, start with 25% of the recommended feeding portion of the new food mixed with 75% of the recommended portion of the current diet. For the next two to three days, feed 50% each of the recommended portions of the new and current diets. For the last two to three days, feed 75% of the new diet and 25% of the current one before transitioning to the new formula entirely.

The guaranteed analysis gives you a nutritional breakdown of the formula and what is included. By the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) regulations, the guaranteed analysis is required to list four nutrients: crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber and moisture.

Our puppy and All Life Stages formulas are specifically developed to meet the nutritional needs of dogs of all ages, from puppies to seniors. Our puppy and All Life Stages formulas contain added DHA, which aids in brain and vision development in puppies. Additionally, our puppy formulas feature a smaller kibble size than our adult maintenance formulas. Our adult maintenance formulas are formulated to meet the nutritional needs of adult dogs and are not suitable for puppies.

Probiotics have numerous benefits, including helping your pet digest food more efficiently and supporting a healthy digestive and immune system, which contribute to overall well-being. Our probiotics are derived from bacteria that are found in the GI tract of dogs and cats and then processed under strict quality and safety standards. Each strain is guaranteed to be free of harmful pathogens or other contaminants.

Every Diamond, Diamond Naturals, Diamond Naturals Grain-Free, Diamond CARE and Diamond Pro89 dry dog formula is enhanced with K9 Strain Probiotics, and every Diamond and Diamond Naturals dry cat formula, as well as the Diamond CARE Weight Management Formula for Adult Cats, is enhanced with Viables Probiotics. Each of these dog and cat formulas are guaranteed to provide 80 million colony forming units (CFU) per pound of these proprietary probiotics. Click here to learn more about our proprietary probiotic technology.

You can feed just canned food to your pet; however, it is important to read the nutritional adequacy statement on the label to make sure that the product you choose is appropriate for the life stage of your pet.

Diamond Naturals canned food is made with real meat and delivers delicious taste with the nutrition of a premium pet food. Select canned formulas also include superfoods for great nutrition and digestibility.

We find many cats love Diamond Pet Foods dog food, and dogs love our cat food. However, the formulas contain ingredients to best meet the nutritional needs of each species. We highly recommend you work to ensure your pet primarily eats his/her own food.

In order for puppies to properly grow and develop, they require more calories, protein, fat, minerals and amino acids than adult dogs do. As they mature and their rate of growth slows, their metabolism also decreases. For these reasons, an adult dog will require less food than they did as a puppy.

All Diamond Pet Foods feeding guides should be read based on the current weight of your puppy or dog.

As a general guide, we recommend transitioning puppies to adult food at about 10–12 months of age. For large or giant breeds, who typically weigh 70 pounds or more as adults, 12–18 months of age is a good time to make the transition to adult food. However, if you’re feeding an All Life Stages formula, your dog can continue on the recipe indefinitely.

An All Life Stages formula meets the nutritional needs of dogs or cats of all ages and at all stages of life, from puppies or kittens to seniors. A maintenance formula only meets the nutritional needs of adult dogs or cats.
