Recall FAQ

How do I determine if my cat’s food was affected?

You will need to determine if your cat food bag matches one of the Production Codes and the Best By dates listed below. If there is a match, your product has been recalled.

Further distribution of these affected production codes has occured through online sales.  It's best to check the production code to determine if the product has been recalled or not.

The production code can be located on the bottom of the bag.

The following graphic illustrates how to read the PRODUCTION CODE and BEST BY date:

What products have been recalled?

Diamond Naturals Kitten Formula is the only Diamond Naturals formula affected by this recall.

Please check the Production Code and Best By date on your bag to determine if your product is recalled.

Why were the products recalled?

This voluntary recall was initiated as a precautionary measure because the products have the potential to have a low level of thiamine (Vitamin B1). Diamond Pet Foods is doing this in order to ensure only quality product is available and to protect the health and safety of cats. There have been no complaints regarding thiamine levels, or any other health issues, related to these products.

My production code is longer than what I see listed. How do I know if my product is affected?

To determine if your product is affected, please refer to the first 7 digits of your production code and the coordinating best by date. Only product with the Best By dates and Production Codes listed above are included in the voluntary recall.

I have a 6oz sample, and the bag does not have a production code or best before date stamped on it.

If you have a 6oz sample of a formula that has been recalled, you should discard the product and visit your retailer for a replacement sample.

What symptoms might cats be exhibiting if they have low levels of thiamine?

Cats fed product with the listed Production Codes and Best By dates exclusively for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency. Thiamine is essential for cats in maintaining normal nervous system function. When cats do not get enough thiamine in their diet, the symptoms can include anorexia, weight loss, muscle weakness, abnormal mental state, staggering gate, seizure activity, and unusual position (bent down) of the neck. The symptoms rapidly progress without treatment.

A vitamin injection administered by a veterinarian can correct the deficiency and resolve the symptoms, especially if treatment is sought early.

Pet owners should contact their veterinarians immediately if a cat is displaying any of these signs. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency typically is reversible.

I didn’t keep my bag so I don’t know if my product is affected by the recall. What do I do?

We know many people prefer to store their pet food in separate containers and throw away the bags once they are opened, making it difficult to tell whether the food is affected by this recall.

Your satisfaction is our goal. To request a refund or a coupon for a new bag, please fill out and send in the Refund Request form.

If you don't have the Production Codes and Best By dates, you must provide an alternate proof of purchase.

How do I get a refund or coupon for a replacement bag of food?

More information about obtaining a refund or coupon for a replacement bag of food can be found on the Refund Process page. Please download the Refund Request form on that page to ensure you’ve included all required items.

What is the status of my refund?

I’m in another country and need to know if the food I have is affected by the recall.

Please refer to the production codes listed in the voluntary recall. If the production code on your bag is not included in the list, your cat food is not being recalled.

My bag didn’t have a production code – what should I do?

If the production code does not appear on your bag, you will need to get a replacement bag of food. To receive a coupon for a free replacement bag of food, please cut out the production code and UPC section of the bag, and submit with the information required in the Refund Process section.

How is Diamond Pet Foods ensuring this doesn't happen again?
