Arthritis Medication Concerns

Arthritis Medication Concerns
With the recent news stories about popular medications used to treat arthritis symptoms in humans, many people are worrying about the safety of the medication that their pets are taking.

Veterinarians have several options available for managing the chronic pain associated with arthritis in dogs. Some of these same medications, such as Rimadyl and Deramaxx, may also be used to treat post-operative pain.

Just like in humans, there are possible side effects associated with the use of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's). Although severe reactions are rare, they do sometimes occur.

Working with your veterinarian to ensure that your pet is in good health prior to beginning a pain management program will help ensure a positive outcome. Chemical analysis of blood samples will help ensure that critical organ systems are functioning properly. Make sure that your veterinarian knows about any medications your pet is taking, especially other pain medications like aspirin.

Many pets have been given a better quality of life because of new pain management medications, and discontinuing the treatment is not warranted. However, caution and care are warranted, and should be used in all cases.

Please note that this information does not replace professional veterinary care. It is solely for educational purposes. Your pet's medical condition should be evaluated by a veterinarian before any medical decisions are implemented. If there is a potentially life-threatening emergency involving your pet, take your pet to a veterinarian or veterinary facility immediately.
